Free afternoon in León.

DAY 3:

Breakfast.  Your guide will be waiting in the lobby to take you on a tour of a piece of land a few kilometers from León and Poneloya Beach — the Rancho is a house with open corridors surrounded by trees and scenic views of the volcanic chain of the Maribios.  The tour will be done on horseback through the tropical dry forest, and you’ll learn a bit about the flora of the area.  You’ll visit some neighboring communities and interact with the locals, and you’ll also have the opportunity to participate in daily farm activities such as cow-milking and tortilla-making.  Traditional lunch at the Rancho while enjoying the view.  Free afternoon to visit León (optional).

DAY 4:

DAY 7:

Breakfast. In the morning, your guide awaits to begin this excellent tour in one of the top tourist destinations in the country.  You’ll begin the tour with a short walk to the San Francisco Convent Museum, where you’ll learn a bit about the history of the city, from pre-Columbian and colonial times, as well as the customs and traditions of the Granadinos.  The tour continues in a horse-drawn carriage, visiting interesting sites such as the old train station, the old San Juan de Dios hospital, the Pólvora Fortress, an exterior view of some old colonial churches, the bell tower of the La Merced Church with a 360 degree panoramic view of the city.  You’ll also visit the “choco museo” chocolate factory, where you’ll learn the process of chocolate-making and create your own chocolate as part of a workshop.  Then, you’ll continue towards the yellow cottage marina, where you’ll board a boat for a tour of some of the 365 volcanic islets, many of them in their original conditions.  You’ll see the elevated platform of the San Pablo Fortress, used to protect the city from British pirates during colonial times.  You’ll see many species of birds, both resident and migratory, as well as island-dwellers practicing their artisanal style of fishing.  Return to solid ground and transfer to hotel.

DAY 8:

Breakfast.  Your guide will be waiting at the scheduled time to take you to the port of San Juan del Sur.  On the way, you’ll make a stop at the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve, at the skirts of which you’ll begin a canopy tour.  You’ll practice the extreme sport of zip-lining along a steel cable through tree canopies.  On this tour you’ll feel like you’re flying, all the while observing a great variety of animals and plants that live in the reserve.  The canopy tour covers two kilometers, consisting of 11 tracks and 17 platforms.  Prior to the activity, you’ll have a chance to enjoy a fresh cup of hot coffee, grown and processed in the skirts of the volcano.  Your local guide will relay everything you need to enjoy this activity safely, including safety instructions, equipment, helmets, harnesses, and more.  After basic training, you’ll be able to hang from the double cable and fly from one tree to another in seconds.  After returning to the office, you’ll get in the vehicle to continue on to your final destination of San Juan del Sur Bay.
