The Precolombian Spheres of Costa Rica are now World Heritage

Speaking of unique riches of Costa Rica , Do you remember the enigmatic Columbian spheres? Perhaps you’ve seen them in a documentary or cultural articles.

What you should know is that today, these Costa Rican treasures are recognized in the List of World Heritage United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

This was agreed at the 38th Session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, held from June 15th to 25th in Doha, Qatar. The appointment had the support and approval of the delegations of Germany, Colombia, Croatia, Jamaica, Philippines, Turkey, Vietnam, India and Algeria.

This is historic because it is the first time that Costa Rica does enter its cultural property within this prestigious list . He had previously registered the Guanacaste Conservation Area , the Isla del Coco, and the International Friendship Park , National Park as natural sites .

Now the recognition corresponds to 4 sites located in Peninsula de Osa, Puntarenas; in the south. This area was populated by pre-Columbian settlements between 400 a.C. and 1500 a.C; when the spheres were manufactured.

These historical areas have attracted the attention from all the world for its perfect roundness; which shows the degreof specialization of the craftsmen of the time; besides the level of difficulty that may be required to transfer them. They made it ​​in many sizes, from a few centimeters to 2.5 meters in diameter.

The government of Costa Rica announced it is necessary to join efforts to protect these wonderful monuments and also take advantage of promoting the development of these communities south, through cultural tourism.

This type of events are what make Costa Rica a proud country of its Indian roots.
