Rica accounts for over 812 species of birds (check out what kinds of birds there are in Costa Rica), some of them on the verge of extinction, and many with a unique beauty that makes it hard to believe they exist in real life.

With so much of its space preserved in national parks and reserves, Costa Rica is a wonderland for the bird-loving set, with countless spots for bird watching in Costa Rica.

Today we will share with you the highest-ranked destinations, according to our visitors. We promise you a fantastic bird-watching experience.

Best Bird Watching Destinations in Costa Rica

  • San Gerardo de Dota

San Gerardo de Dota is a cloud forest surrounded by majestic waterfalls and lush flora where you will be able to find the magnificent Quetzal.

It might be a good idea to do your research before visiting the area, as the Quetzal is an extremely rare bird found only in Central America, and very hard to spot. But you’re in luck in San Gerardo de Dota: they hang out in avocado trees by the side of the road.

  • Sarapiqui

Ready for your close up? At Sarapiqui Eco-Observatory in North Central Costa Rica, you will find an exuberant rain forest reserve with a lot of potential for bird watching. The observatory was designed as a birding hotspot and it recently became a famous tour destination for National Geographic Expeditions.

Here you will spot over 215 bird species, such as the chestnut-colored woodpecker, the gray-crowned yellowthroat, or the tropical parula. The observatory includes a wide, covered deck from where you can set up your tripod and shoot amazing pictures to make your friends jealous!

  • Monteverde

Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve is located in the heart of Costa Rica, and is well known for housing 2.5% of the entire world’s biodiversity! No wonder it’s home to some of the brightest birds of the world such as: the Quetzal, Toucans, green-crowned brilliant hummingbirds or the violet-crowned wood nymph.

There are countless options for Bird watching tours in Monteverde where you can identify more than 350 different species. Do not miss this amazing birding spot during your next holidays to Costa Rica.

  • Tortuguero National Park

Tortuguero National Park is a 47,000-acre reserve on the northeastern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. There are no roads leading to Tortuguero; it’s mainly accessed by boat, which makes it an absolutely amazing experience.

This national park has birds you cannot find anywhere else in the world. We recommend taking a tour around the canals and staying quiet to spot great green macaws, crested eagles, or yellow-billed Cuckoos.

Every year Costa Rica welcomes around 2,500,000 tourists from all around the world, all looking for a great adventure. Bird watching has become one of the most popular activities among Europeans for the wide variety of endemic birds you can find Costa Rica.
