The Serpentarium and Frog Pond tour starts as your tour guide and transportation drive you to Santa Elena town and the already recognized Serpentarium of Monteverde with its fantastic collection of more than 30 different species of amphibians and reptiles.
As you walk in, your tour guide will tell you the fundamental differences between vipers and non-venomous snakes in Costa Rica.
You will then see an area with several species of turtles, as well as Green Iguanas and Emerald Basilisks.
Following, you will see the terrariums where there are several different species of snakes of Monteverde, as well as Costa Rican. They have acclimatized the glass-paneled nature resembling containers so that the animals can feel at home.
You will learn a lot of the snakes of Costa Rica, and most importantly, you will know how to recognize them and where to look for them.
Among the snakes of Costa Rica exhibition, similarly. You will find, the infamous fer-de-lance – (Bothrops asper) known for its aggressiveness, agility and neurotoxic venom; as well as the colorful yet deadly eye-lash vipers(Bothriechis schlegelii, the big bushmaster (Lachesis stenophrys) and the fantastic boa constrictors.
Afterward, and back on your tour vehicle, your tour guide and driver will take you to the Frog Pond, less than a mile away (1,3 km).
As you arrive in the Frog Pond another series of glass-paneled naturally represented terrariums will receive you to show you 25 species of local frogs and other amphibians.
This is a tour to experience the thrill of these diverse species, but mainly to learn from the specialized tour guides.
As you follow them in both places, you will see species as cute and rare as the “Blue Jeans Frog” or the Strawberry Poison-dart Frog (Oophaga Pumilio) a bright red, blue legged jewel of the lowlands; as well as the extraordinary Green-and-Black Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates auratus) only found in this section of Central America.
You will also enjoy the famous “Red-Eyed Treefrog” (Agalychnis callidryas) and some other fantastic amphibians of Costa Rica like the marine toad, the cane toad, the leopard frog, and the incredible hourglass frog.
This is a great comfortable experience, great for rainy afternoons or if you feel a little tired of the traveling and adventures, but still want to do something. And especially fantastic for snakes and frogs’ lovers.
