You will be picked up at your hotel at the end of the afternoon, to arrive at one of the reserves in the Monteverde region, where you will be provided with a flashlight and introduced to your guide.
The Monteverde Night Hike begins at dusk when the cloud forest swarms with activity, as the animals and day birds retire to rest, and all the nocturnal creatures start to leave their hiding places to go hunting and feeding.
The trails are usually quite wide and the terrain even if broken is smooth to walk. However, bring sturdy closed shoes as ants may be teeming in the forest floors.
You should also bring your camera and a sound memory chip in it. Usually, the cell phone cannot zoom as clearly as the right lens of a camera.
You may see two-toed sloths, porcupines, coatimundis, frogs, tarantulas, and other species stretching or running through tall tree branches. Insects and nocturnal birds start a magnificent concert full of different noises.
It is essential to follow the instructions and stay with your group all the time because the jungle can be deceptive, and if you are not alert, you could get lost in the paths.
You will walk for more than an hour through the reserve, observing the different forms of forest life while your guide tells you interesting information about what you are seeing. The guides usually carry great optical gear that will allow you to see the details in the different animals. They also communicate with radios not to miss any of the animals.
But, aside from what you’ll see in wildlife, we invite you to simply enjoy the experience of the senses in the cloud forest at night. The sounds, the aromas, the feeling of being surrounded by life can be surprising.
And to crown the night, and if it is not cloudy, the starry sky seen through the giant trees and in the dark will give you an unforgettable impression.
Stay alert to everything you hear and see, but even more, breathe in the fresh night air of the Monteverde forests and inhale into it, the purest and most vital of the pure life of Costa Rica.
