Overview

Corcovado National Park is an excellent choice if you are in the Central or South Pacific region of Costa Rica.

And, it is quite essential to know that the number of visitors to the park is under specific regulations and reservations fill up fast. So, depending on the season of your vacation, most recommended is to book it in advance.

Corcovado National Park, holding over 40,000 HA (98,000 acres) of land and 3300 hectares (8000 acres) of the sea is famous for its vast diversity, in all possible species of the region. From animals such as the tapir, jaguar or puma to its more than 6000 species of insects, 140 mammals, 367 birds, 117 amphibians and reptile’s species, and 40 freshwater fish species, this national park always keeps you in awe.

Know that Corcovado is raw nature at its best. A place where you will live the intensity of the jungle, the fantastic sounds, aromas, and sensations, but it may as well be a bit wet or with mosquitoes around. It is the jungle in its best expression.

The Corcovado National Park Day hike starts at Punta Uvita departs by boat towards San Pedrillo Ranger Station.

The ride towards the National Park may be one of the most amazing parts of this tour as dolphins abound in this area and depending on the season, also whales.

As you arrive in San Pedrillo get ready for two fantastic hikes escorted by a local tour guide that is an expert in the region’s biology.

Each walk will be of approximately 2 hours. As you hike on the trails, you may see many mammals, as the four species of monkeys and two spices of sloths in Costa Rica. You will also enjoy sightings of coatimundis, raccoons, agouti pacas, and tapirs.

In this hike, there might be excellent bird watching also. The Corcovado National Park is home to more than 350 species of birds, but some of the most common to see are: Great Tinamou (Tinamus major), Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura), White Hawk (Leucopternis albicollis), Ruddy Quail-Dove (Geotrygon Montana), Scarlet Macaw (Ara Macao), Keel-billed toucans, Fiery-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii),Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), Black-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus) and depending on the season beauties like: the Three-wattled Bellbird (Procnias tricarunculata), and the Blue-crowned Manakin (Pipra coronata).
