The Cahuita Horseback Riding Tour will allow you to experience the roots of the Costa Rica Caribbean, its nature and some of its most remarkable stories.
The Caribbean region of Costa Rica has its own culture, diet, and even dialect. It’s like a country within a country. The African-Costa Rican population that you find in this area came from Jamaica to work in the railroad construction. And they were isolated from the Central Valley for decades.
The Cahuita Horseback Riding Tour starts in Cahuita town, and they are done by Mr. Joe the last genuine cowboy of the area, he is a local guide and belongs to the last generation of people who traveled around the South Caribbean numerous villages on horseback. Mr. Joe, comes from a time, not so long ago when the South Caribbean was very isolated, and there was no electricity or even a road connecting the towns.
The first part of the experience goes around the town of Cahuita and into Playa Negra (Black Beach) famous for its charcoal black volcanic sand, and then to Playa Grande reaching the river Tuba Creek when it reaches the ocean.
Riding on the beach is always lovely, maybe the softness of the sand, or the breeze and getting in and out of the shallow water. As you reach the river mouth you will be in an area where you can gallop if you like or see the luscious nature of the forests of the Costa Rican south Caribbean.
The horses are tamed and well treated, they know what to do, and they enjoy these smooth rides. If you have experience and want to ride faster on a brisk horse, please let us know in advance.
You will enjoy the beautiful sea, the ever-active wildlife of the area, and the cool breeze that always refreshes the ride. And this may become the highlight of your trip.
